The origin of birthstones
The tradition of birthstones dates back to antiquity: the breastplate of the High Priest described in Exodus bore twelve stones corresponding to the twelve tribes of Israel, later linked to the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve months of the year.
The modern list of birthstones was standardised by the American National Retail Jewelers Association in 1912, with several revisions since. In many countries, the tradition tends to blend sources: classic precious stones and more accessible crystal alternatives coexist alongside contemporary crystal healing practices.
